The 37th Palm Springs International Film Festival is taking place from January 2 to 12, 2026, in Palm Springs, California. The evening was attended by Teyana Taylor, Chase Infiniti, Elle Fanning, and many
other awards hopeful artists. Now recently, on Sunday, December 4, Guillermo del Toro, who was being honoured for the Visionary Award for the Netflix film Frankenstein, spoke about his brother's death for the first time, the reason for his non-attendance at future gatherings this season. He expressed on the stage, 'Even a broken heart pumps the blood and keeps you going.'
Guillermo Del Toro talks about brother's death, break from social gatherings
During the event, Guillermo del Toro took a moment to mention his regards for his 2025 film Frankenstein. The 61-year-old expressed, "I’ve come to believe that everybody’s born with one or two songs to sing. That’s it, and we keep repeating them and repeating them until we get them sort of right. And
Frankenstein was the song I was born to sing. I lost my older brother but I’m here, and I’m here because the film speaks about a condition that is purely human; that is proved by the final phase in the film, which says the heart may break and the broken live on. Even a broken heart pumps the blood and keeps you going.” He recalled a beautiful memory of the two saying, "My brother and I played Victor and the creature on many moments in our lives,” he said in reference to
Frankenstein‘s two main characters, and “many years ago, we granted each other love and granted each other peace. So I’m here for family. I may be absent at a few functions this [awards] season, but not this one. I’m here because this is family. Life gives you a family on the way.”
Timothee Chalamet accepts Spotlight Award
The event also saw Timothée Chalamet taking home the Spotlight Award for his performance as table tennis phenom Marty Mauser in A24’s
Marty Supreme. The award was presented by director and co-writer Josh Safdie. During his speech, the actor said, "Thank you everyone for being here. This means the most to me to feel the strength of this film community. I have my back, I'm warm, I'm truly thankful." He further went on to honour Safdie as he said, "Thank you Josh. Man, this man's a genius. This man's like a true artist here. Really, this man is my right here. He's an embodiment of what we all celebrate truly."He concluded his speech with, "I'm taking a moment to say thank you for the opportunity to work. Thank you to everyone for taking the time to be here tonight, and onwards. Thank you." Meanwhile, his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, watched from his table, cheering him on. This edition of the festival will present 168 films from 72 countries, including 53 premieres and 44 Oscar Submissions. It will close with Brian Cox's British drama film
Glenrothan.
