Amid ongoing concerns about LPG supply disruptions across parts of India, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, commonly known as I4C has issued a warning about a sharp rise in fake LPG booking scams. Fraudsters are reportedly capitalising on the shortage anxiety to push users into hasty payments or trick them into sharing sensitive financial details. The alert was shared through the government's official CyberDost handle on X (previously Twitter), accompanied by an infographic breaking down how the scam operates and what users can do to protect themselves. How The Scam Actually WorksThe playbook is fairly predictable once you know what to look for. Scammers are sending messages through SMS, WhatsApp and social media platforms, claiming
that immediate LPG booking is required due to limited availability, or dangling discount offers to grab attention. The messages typically include links that visually resemble official booking portals. Some go further, asking users to download apps from unknown sources or scan QR codes to process a payment.Once someone engages, the requests escalate quickly, OTPs, PINs and bank account details. The fake platforms are often designed to look convincing enough that users don't immediately question their legitimacy, which is exactly what makes them effective.
