Over 1,000 Amazon employees have issued a public warning to the company’s top leadership including CEO Andy Jassy and the S-team, arguing that its rapid push into artificial intelligence risks causing
serious harm to democracy, jobs and the environment. The open letter was organised by the activist group Amazon Employees for Climate Justice (AECJ). So far, more than 1,039 Amazon staff members and over 2,436 external supporters have signed the letter. The signatories include senior engineers, managers, scientists, designers, logistics employees, and marketing professionals. Together, they are urging Amazon to slow down what they call a 'warp-speed' deployment of AI systems that prioritises profits and automation over ethics, sustainability, and human well-being.According to the letter, Amazon’s rapid rollout of AI could weaken democratic institutions, speed up the climate crisis and wipe out many jobs due to automation. The employees warn that moving too fast without proper checks could harm society and the environment and they urge the company to adopt a more responsible approach."We have serious concerns about this aggressive rollout during the global rise of authoritarianism and our most important years to reverse the climate crisis," the employees wrote. They are demanding ethical AI working groups with non-managerial staff and more transparency on how AI tools impact workloads, career paths and working conditionsThe warning comes as Amazon has reportedly cut around 14,000 jobs, part of broader cost-saving and automation moves across the company. CEO Andy Jassy has repeatedly said that AI is central to Amazon’s future and that next-gen AI agents will take over many operational tasks. The group says Amazon should lead in building AI that benefits everyone including fairer working conditions, sustainable development and democratic safeguards. The Amazon employees signing this letter believe in building a better world. "We want the promised gains from AI to give everyone more freedom to play and rest, to spend time with family and friends, to be moved by nature, to create, to feel safe being who we are."
