Dhurandhar embroiled in controversy
The parents of Ashok Chakra and Sena Medal awardee late Major Mohit Sharma have filed a petition seeking an immediate stay on the release of Ranveer Singh’s upcoming film
Dhurandhar, according to Bar & Bench. In their plea, the family alleges that the film extensively portrays Major Sharma’s life, secret missions, and martyrdom without obtaining consent from the Indian Army or his legal heirs. While media speculation has linked the movie to Major Sharma’s story, the petition claims that the filmmakers have not consulted the family in any way. The family stressed that martyrs are “not a commercial commodity” and that portraying a soldier’s life on screen without approval violates their posthumous personality rights, the privacy and dignity of the family, and potentially even national security by depicting sensitive military operations. The petition requests the court to halt the film’s public release, conduct a private screening for Major Sharma’s family first, and mandate that any future films based on martyrs require prior permission from both the Army and the family.
Dhurandhar director Aditya Dhar's statement
However, director Aditya Dhar has clarified that
Dhurandhar is not based on Major Sharma’s life. He stated, “Our film
Dhurandhar is not based on the life of the brave Major Mohit Sharma AC(P)SM. This is an official clarification. I assure you that if we make a biopic on Mohit Sir in the future, we will do it with the full consent and support of the family.” The Ranveer Singh-starrer, directed by Aditya Dhar, is scheduled to release in theatres on December 5.
