Shahid
The National Film Award-winning feature stars Rajkummar Rao as lawyer Shahid Azmi. The hard-hitting biopic followed Shahid's journey from accused terrorist to human rights activist and advocate who helped those who had been falsely convicted of terrorism like him. Written by Sameer Gautam Singh and Apurva Asrani, the feature includes his 2010 assassination in court as well. Director Hansal Mehta and star Rajkummar were honoured with National Awards for their work.No One Killed Jessica
Rajkumar Gupta's crime drama is based on the Jessica Lal murder case from April 1999, in which a young female bartender was shot to death by a politician's son. Vidya Balan plays Jessica's sister Sabrina, who fights for justice after her sister's murder, while Rani Mukerji is the lawyer who fights her case. At the 57th Filmfare Awards, Rani won Best Supporting Actress for her performance.Uri: The Surgical Strike
Writer-director Aditya Dhar's directorial debut, Uri (2019), recounts the covert operation led by the Indian army in retaliation to the 2016 Uri attack. Vicky Kaushal plays Major Vihaan Shergill, who leads his troops in a surgical strike to avenge an attack on the brigade headquarters at Uri. The National Award-winning film also stars Yami Gautam, Paresh Rawal, Kirti Kulhari, and Mohit Raina.Airlift
In Raja Krishna Menon's Airlift, Akshay Kumar plays Ranjit Katya, an Indian businessman in Kuwait who becomes an unlikely hero as he leads an evacuation of his countrymen during an invasion by Iraq during the Gulf War. The Hindi film is based on the real-life story of Kuwait-based Indian businessmen Mathunny Mathews, Harbhajan Singh Vedi, and more. Nimrat Kaur, Purab Kohli, Kumud Mishra, Prakash Belawadi, and Ninad Kamat also star in this harrowing drama.Pad Man
Another Akshay Kumar film, the R. Balki movie is inspired by the efforts of social activist and entrepreneur Arunachalam Murugananthan. Also starring Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte, the inspirational film features Akshay as Lakshmikant Chauhan, who comes up with cost-effective sanitary pads for rural women after seeing his wife's plight.
