Dhar-directed Dhurandhar: The Revenge has been the hot topic of discussion ever since it released in theatres on March 19. Breaking several records within days, the espionage thriller redefined box office rules in India. However, legal woes for the film are not ending. According to the latest report, the Delhi High Court asked the central government and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to address the issue raised in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) alleging that Dhurandhar 2 allegedly disclosed tactical and sensitive information regarding India’s intelligence and defence operations.
Why was PIL filed against Dhurandhar 2
The PIL was filed by
aSashastraSeema Bal (SSB) personnel. The bench, comprising Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia, said in court that the censor board should have some guidelines. According to PTI, the bench instructed the CBFC and the central government to take an ‘informed decision’. The petitioner reportedly told the court that
Dhurandhar 2 violated the Official Secrets Act (OSA), 1923, as it showed tactical operations, sensitive locations, and agents in detail. The Sashastra Seema Bal personnel further claimed that the film, at certain junctures, even leaked information that could impact the country’s security.
Did Dhurandhar 2 violate safety protocols?
As per the PTI report, the petitioner further raised objections to Dhurandhar 2 using ‘classified protocols’ in certain scenes. In addition, its depiction of ‘deep cover identities’ was questioned. The PIL claimed that the espionage thriller ‘directly
compromised the safety of our on-field undercover agents’ and it led to local authorities in Pakistan being on ‘spy alert’. The Sashastra Seema Bal personnel demanded the framing of a ‘spy movie protocol’ and the revocation of the certification of
Dhurandhar 2.
Delhi High Court instructs probe
The court considered the concerns raised by the petitioner and believed that they needed to be addressed appropriately. “We dispose of the writ petition with a direction to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and
CBFC to consider the entire writ petition as representation of the petitioner and take an appropriate decision on the issues raised,” the court said, according to the report.
Dhurandhar 2 OTT release
While the central government and CBFC are investigating the matter, Dhurandhar 2 is in the process of being released on OTT platforms. The ‘Raw And Undekha’ version is currently streaming outside India on Netflix and JioHotstar.
