Times Now

how the film’s script left her speechless and why portraying Shah Bano is her “dream role.”
Yami Gautam Says Haq Left Her Speechless
In an exclusive interview with Times Group Editor-in-Chief Navika Kumar, Yami shared, “I think kuch aisi filmein hoti hain jo kahin na kahin aap jo personal taur par believe rakhte hain nishpaksh hokar, nidar hokar aur agar vo achi script banti hain, mujhe mauka mile aise subjects ka hissa banne ka, do baar pehle mil chuka hain ye usse bahut alag hain, ek alag hi dimension hai aur ek aisi jaddojehad hai jo bahut salon se hain.”(Translation: “I think there are some films that align deeply with what you personally believe in — with honesty and fearlessness. If a good script like that comes my way, I feel fortunate to be part of such subjects. I’ve had the chance twice before, but this one is very different — it’s a whole new dimension and represents a struggle that has existed for many years.”)She further added, “If I go by my instinct and I don’t think for a while they will be able to say anything, main maanti hu Haq ek bahut hi achi film bani hain, bahut balanced film bani hai in the sense ek film hai aisa nahi hai it's not about conversations, debates, discussions uska by-product hai, it left me speechless.”(Translation: “If I follow my instinct, I believe Haq has turned out to be an excellent and very balanced film. It’s not just about debates or discussions — those are by-products. The film truly left me speechless.”)

Yami Gautam Calls It Her Dream Role
Speaking about her role as Shah Bano, Yami said, “It is a dream role for any actor. Maine jab pehli baar unka naam padha tha jinki hum baat kar rahe hain — Shah Bano case jab it was making headlines. I still remember the image of her eyes, those haunting eyes, it was a headshot par usme itni depth thi even though I was a teenager back then, I remember I felt something so distinct, so peculiar about that image. When I read about it, utni hi knowledge thi jitni ek aam nagrik ko hoti hai newspaper padhke. The concept of women empowerment yeh topics itne openly nahi the toh kitni himmat chahiye ek aurat ko ye karne ke liye.”(Translation: “It is a dream role for any actor. I first read her name Shah Bano, when the case made headlines. I still remember the image of her haunting eyes in a headshot, there was so much depth in them. Even as a teenager, I felt something very distinct and powerful about that image. Back then, I knew only as much as any ordinary citizen reading the newspaper would. Women’s empowerment wasn’t an openly discussed topic, so it took immense courage for a woman to do what she did.”)She further shared her emotional preparation for the role, “So all I had to do was, har take se pehle, chahe hasne ka hi scene kyun nahi hota tha, main zaroor aankhein bandh karke vahi image jo maine dekhi thi bachpan mein vo apne zehan mein lati thi, just to remember who I’m actually representing — not just one woman but so many of us from different statas, alag religion ho apka, koi bhi ho, kis age ki ho at some level.”(Translation: “Before every take, even if it was a scene where I had to smile, I would close my eyes and recall that image I saw as a child. It reminded me of who I was representing — not just one woman, but countless others from different walks of life, religions, and ages.”)Haq to hit the screens on November 7.
