It's
a good thing that fans already know that Daredevil: Born Again is coming back for a third season because the ending has left most fans on edge. The finale of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 concludes the trial of Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) and the ongoing battle in New York City led by Mayor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio), who has become more and more tyrannical. So how does Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) save his city and defeat the mayor who also goes by Kingpin? By making a big confession. Here's what went down. Warning: Major Spoilers Ahead!
Daredevil Born Again Season 2 Episode 8 - Matt Murdock's confession
The season two finale, titled
The Southern Cross, is written by showrunner
Dario Scardapane and Jesse Wigutow. It is directed by Iain B. MacDonald, who oversees Karen's trial and the takedown of Mayor Fisk. In the previous episode, Matt was introduced as co-counsel in the case, leading to some explosive confessions in the court. He and Kirsten McDuffie (Nikki M. James) work together to show that the vigilante charges against Karen are trumped.
He does so by essentially outing himself as the vigilante Daredevil and exposing Fisk's crimes, beginning with the sinking of the Northern Star at the start of the season. Fisk, who has become unhinged after the death of his wife Vanessa (Ayelet Zurer), doubles down on his control over New York City even as Governor Marge McCaffrey (Lili Taylor) asks him to resign. Both Fisk and Daredevil are on the steps of the courthouse when Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) tries to take a shot against the mayor. It sends everyone under lockdown in the building, with both sides preparing for war. BB (Genneya Walton) also posts her latest video, adding fuel to the fire about the mayor's illegal activities and his takeover of New York. The Anti-Vigilante Task Force (AVTF) becomes Fisk's army and irate citizens descend on the courthouse.
What happens to Matt Murdock and Mayor Fisk?
The Attorney General initially offers Fisk a deal to step down and he won't be charged with any crimes. Instead, the defiant mayor starts assaulting and killing citizens, who have dressed up as Daredevil, and goes to the lobby of the courthouse, where he is besieged by an angry mob. While Matt and Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) try to stop them from killing Fisk, he allows the mayor to leave New York and never return. The episode ends with Fisk on a sandy beach, pondering his future. As for Matt, he is arrested for the crimes he committed as Daredevil and goes to jail, along with the rest of the AVTF. In his jail cell, he doesn't seem to regret outing himself as the masked vigilante. Instead, he offers up a slight smile at the end.
Setup for Daredevil Born Again Season 3
After Ritter's Jessica Jones, we see the return of Luke Cage (Mike Colter) in the final episode as he comes to visit their daughter Danielle. Colter and Danny Rand (Finn Jones) have already been spotted filming in New York City for Season 3 so the
Defenders plot is coming back in motion for future episodes. Cage gives up his spot with Mr Charles (Matthew Lillard) for overseas covert missions and Bullseye replaces him as he steps away from the city.
Another plot point that Season 3 might explore is Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva) going into full villain mode. After testifying against Karen, the therapist wears the Muse mask for the first time and smiles devilishly in the mirror. Both seasons of
Daredevil: Born Again are now streaming on JioHotstar.
