The Untold Story of How Bharathiraja’s Debut 16 Vayathinile Brought Together Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth and Sridevi

In an event Kamal Haasan spoke about meeting Bharathiraja for the first time. The aspiring director arrived at his office dressed simply in a 'dirty' veshti and shirt. Despite his humble appearance, Bharathiraja's narration impressed Kamal Haasan. The actor said that the story and the filmmaker's talent drew him so much, that he decided to be a part of it.

Bharathiraja believed that lead characters did not need to fit conventional standards of beauty. He wanted 'real-look'over glamour and aimed to challenge existing ideas of what a hero should look like. To achieve that realism, Bharathiraja gave Kamal a completely deglamourised look. The actor sported curly hair, simple shirts, nose ring and vesthi to portray Chappani, a ridiculed village man creating one of the most memorable performances of his career.

How Much Did Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth Charge For 16 Vayathinile16 Vayathinile?

Kamal Haasan also reduced his remuneration to support the film. His fee reportedly came down from Rs 30,000 to Rs 27,000, which showed his faith in the first-time director and the film's potential. Rajinikanth also made a sacrifice to be part of 16 Vayathinile. Cast as the village rogue Parattaiyan, the actor reportedly agreed to reduce his remuneration by half.

While he had initially quoted Rs 5,000, he eventually accepted Rs 2,500 for the role. The decision reportedly led to some disagreements between Rajinikanth and Bharathiraja during the making of the film, but the issues were later resolved.

How did Sridevi On Board?

Bharathiraja thought of the character of Mayil as a Class 9 student, around 16 years old. However, when he met Sridevi, who was just 14 at the time, he felt her expressive eyes carried the sparkle he had imagined for the role. Sridevi decided to take the role of a simple village girl. Bharathiraja also played a key role in introducing Sridevi to Hindi cinema.

Although she was initially hesitant about making the shift, he convinced her to take the leap. She eventually made her Hindi film debut in Bharathiraja’s first Hindi directorial venture, Solva Sawan (1979), a remake of 16 Vayathinile.

The Film That Initially Had No Takers

Despite starring a rising actor like Kamal Haasan, 16 Vayathinile struggled to attract distributors before its release. Made on a modest budget of Rs 5 lakh, the production faced several financial problems. At one stage, there was not enough money to film slow-motion sequences using high-speed cameras. To achieve this, the actors were reportedly asked to perform their scenes in slow motion. However, the film's fortunes changed dramatically after its release. 16 Vayathinile became a major commercial success, earning around Rs 10 lakh at the box office and running in theatres for more than 175 days. It emerged as a silver jubilee hit.

At a time when most Tamil films were shot in studio, Bharathiraja stood out, because he chose to tell a rooted rural story. The film's realism, village backdrop, and characters gave audiences something entirely different.
