Parineeti Chopra on mothers suffering from postpartum depression
In an exclusive chat with us, Parineeti said, "Many people think of the delivery or the birth of a baby to be the end of the hard part. (They feel) 'now the baby's here, the pregnancy is over. Now you're just living your life. You don't really have to be taken care of medically'. That's not true."
The actress added that for some mothers pregnancy is easy and postpartum is hard and vice-versa. In her opinion, every mother is different. "But I feel medical assistance, medical awareness, and a support system for a woman whose hormones crash after delivering a baby is a very important medical event that needs to be taken care of," she sadded.Parineeti continued to add, "Unfortunately, the term depression is misused by some people. And they're just like, 'Oh, she's sad'. (But) she's dealing with a painful delivery, painful recovery, a hormonal crash, and emotional crash. She's feeding a baby. She's taking care of a human being." The actress strongly believes that postpartum mothers need to be taken much more care of than what is currently being done. She feels it's not just normalising conversations around it, but seeking professional and family help for a women whose life changed overnight. The actress further reflected on how it's important for a family and husband to be taught how to take care of a new mother. "It's not just taking care of the baby. Sometimes that's the easy part, and the woman is going through much more. If we can support the mother, I know I can speak for every woman, she can do anything. But if she doesn't have that support in those first few months postpartum, she collapses. And if she collapses, the baby, the family and the house collapses," she mentioned.
