Dwayne Johnson to pull off the most unexpected fashion experiment without second-guessing it. Agreeing that ‘Fashion is art’ and more so a cultural celebration, he attended the Met Gala 2026 held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute on the first Monday of May. The actor was with his wife, Lauren Hashian. Celebrating the Polynesian culture, Dwayne made heads turn as he walked the iconic stairs alongside many other international celebrities. Beyond fashion, the Met Gala 2026 look has an emotional connection with the professional wrestler turned Hollywood superstar.
Dwayne Johnson explains reason behind wearing a skirt to Met Gala 2026
Talking to the reporters at the Met Gala 2026, Dwayne explained that the most masculine person in the Polynesian culture wears a skirt. He wore a traditional black pleated
skirt with a white shirt and coat. He posed with Lauren, who looked gorgeous in white. Dwayne told the reporters, “First, Thom Browne’s team sent the illustrations over and asked, ‘Hey, is Deej going to be cool with this pleated skirt?’ And I was like, ‘Look, in our culture, Polynesian culture, we rock lavalavas, we rock skirts.’”Johnson has Samoan citizenship as his mother is Samoan. A
lavalava is a traditional Polynesian rectangular cloth worn as a wraparound skirt. It is commonly worn every day by men and women.

Dwayne has been vocal about masculinity in the past, too. At the CinemaCon where
Moana’s live-action film was confirmed, he shared his views on ‘real masculinity’ and said that for men of all ages, it means empowering the women in their lives. Joining dots between real and reel, the actor said men should empower and support and champion all women. That is how real masculinity looks, he shared.

Beyoncé is co-chairing this year’s event along with Nicole Kidman, Venue Williams and Anna Wintour.
