films, amid the wave of pan-Indian and global cinema, aren’t just restricted to an audience that is familiar with the language. The demand to watch them in theatres isn’t sudden, but the result of years of efforts and unwavering faith in the content that is being produced. In May, two Marathi films ruled the box office and made profits to encourage more filmmakers to take risks and tell stories of local cultures, incidents and people. While Raja Shivaji was mounted on a reported budget of Rs 100 crore, Deool Band 2 was merely Rs 8 to Rs 10 crore.
Deool Band 2 gives tough competition to other theatrical releases
The sequel to 2015 Marathi sociodrama
Deool Band, it explores the grim situation of
farmer suicides and addresses important matters associated with the issues in rural Maharashtra. Owing to strong and positive word of mouth, the film earned Rs 45.05 crore in India (gross) whereas its net collection is reported to be Rs 38.30 crore. The prequel was also a commercial success with Rs 20 crore as its reported lifetime collection against a budget of Rs 6 crore.

Mohan Joshi returns as Shri Swami Samarth Maharaj. In
Deool Band 2, Snehal Tarde plays the role of a farmer woman named Sangeeta Paygude. Drowned in grief, she has an emotional breakdown and ends up pleading with him for help. Out of rage, she throws a stone at a shrine and witnesses Swami Samarth’s presence. Only Sangeeta can see him. He embarks on a journey with her. The film highlights the character’s suffering, grief, and hardship. Director Pravin Tarde has also written the film while playing an important role in it as well. Mahesh Manjrekar and Prasad Oak also feature in key characters.
All about Deool Band
Deool Band (2015) follows the story of Dr Raghav Shastri, an atheist scientist. He returns to India to work on a special project with the Prime Minister. However, his life is at risk as terrorists plan an attack on him. He repeatedly escapes unhurt. Once, out of frustration, he gets the Swami Samarth temple in his residential society shut. As the film progresses, Raghav realises Swami’s miracles and the significance of every event that occurred in his life. The film ends with Raghav becoming a devotee and embracing spirituality.
