Lupita
Nyong'o has reacted to the backlash over her casting in Christopher Nolan's next epic, The Odyssey. The Oscar-winning star defended herself against haters who were against her playing Helen of Troy in the upcoming movie. The 43-year-old also hit back at criticism from Elon Musk on the same. The Odyssey is Nolan's grand adaptation of Homer's legendary Greek epic, and Lupita is among a star-studded cast that also includes Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, and more. The actress has now pushed back against a wave of toxic online criticism surrounding her casting in the $250 million project.
About Lupita Nyong'o's casting backlash
The backlash triggered when political commentator Matt Walsh slammed Nolan on X (formerly Twitter) as a "coward," asserting that "not one person on the planet actually thinks that Lupita Nyong'o is the most beautiful woman in the world." Elon Musk quickly agreed, deriding the choice as a "DEI" hire meant to chase awards.
Reacting to the comments, Lupita Nyong'o responded directly to the criticism in an interview with Elle. She emphasised the film is based on mythology, not historical realism. "This is a mythological story," she said, backing Nolan's vision. She further gave her support to the film's diverse ensemble, saying, "Our cast is representative of the world."
Lupita Nyong'o reacted to her casting
Lupita, however, made it clear that she has no desire to spend her energy defending herself against every criticism. "The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not. … It’s quite something to be a part of The Odyssey, because it is so grand. It spans worlds. So that’s why the cast is what it is. We’re occupying the epic narrative of our time. … I was so deeply honoured to be entrusted with the role," she added.
About playing Helen of Troy

More than beauty? What’s beyond the looks?" According to her, the process began with understanding what was on the page and not trying to live up to public expectations associated with the mythological figure.Lupita said, The Odyssey "crosses worlds." "We’re part of the grand story of our time," she shared in the interview.
