Perfect Crowns releases in India
On June 1, subscribers noticed
Perfect Crown appearing in the "newly added" list on JioHotstar, leaving many shocked. That's because the streamer did not officially announce it through a social media post or even put the show on its home page. It just chose to silently put it out there with the thumbnail featuring IU and Byeon Woo-Seok.
About Perfect Crown
Perfect Crown tells the story of a modern-day grand prince and a chaebol heiress whose marriage of convenience takes an unexpected turn. The show is set in an alternate 21st-century Korea with a constitutional monarchy. IU plays Seong Huiju, a sharp and successful chaebol heiress and CEO who, despite her achievements, is constantly looked down upon for not having royal or noble blood. Byeon Woo-Seok plays Grand Prince Yi An, the king's second son who carries the burden of royal lineage but is never truly given the chance to step into the spotlight. When the two meet, Huiju takes a bold step. She proposes a contract marriage to Yi An, turning both their worlds upside down.
Perfect Crown controversy
Despite becoming a ratings hit,
Perfect Crown found itself at the centre of a growing controversy over its portrayal of Korean history. The backlash intensified after Episode 12 showed Grand Prince I-an, played by Byeon Woo-seok, being crowned while wearing the "Guryumyeongwan," a ceremonial crown historically associated with rulers who acknowledged the Chinese emperor's supremacy.
Critics argued that if the drama intended to depict Korea as a fully independent empire, the character should have worn the "Sipyiryumyeongwan," a crown traditionally reserved for sovereign emperors. The debate grew further when officials in the coronation scene chanted "Cheon-se" rather than "Man-se." Historically, "Cheon-se" was used for Joseon kings, while "Man-se" was reserved for emperors. Many viewers interpreted these details as suggesting that the show's fictional Korea remained subordinate to China, sparking widespread criticism online.
