Sci-fi movies have often shown a human brain being put into a computer, and it behaves like a real version of the human, who cannot die. But has the technology reached to the extent where something like this can happen in real life? An AI startup Eon Systems has created a virtual fruit fly that runs on a computer model of its brain. In simple words, the insect is not animated; rather, its movements are real and come from a digital copy of how its real brain works. How The Fly Is Different From Normal AIIn a video shared on X, the company showed the fly walking, cleaning itself, and moving around in a virtual space. These gestures were not trained to fly using the AI training. However, they were naturally coming from the brain model itself, as per
Eon Systems. Usually AI tools these days are trained using the major chunks of data. However, this project is claimed to do something different. It tries to copy a real brain and let it control a creature that could behave on its own. It simply means that scientists did not teach a machine to behave; they are trying to rebuild a system that already knows how to behave like a real brain.
How The Project MattersInterestingly, the startup is working on a fruit fly, which has nearly 125,000 brain cells. Talking about recreating a human brain, it has billions of cells. Hence, the day it reproduces a human brain is still very far. However, this initiative is a crucial beginning towards the idea. It can help researchers understand how brains work, test diseases, and run experiments. If you believe that this kind of project can lead to mind uploading, then it means the human brain is stored in a computer that can control its thoughts and memories to live digitally. However, the truth is creating the brain signals is not the same as creating a real mind. A digital brain may act like a human, but it may not be truly aware.
