Mohanlal’s Dies Irae which released in cinemas on 31 October, coinciding with Halloween, has set new records at the box office. The film directed by Rahul Sadasivan has emerged as the biggest A-rated Malayalam opener to date beating Unni Mukundan's Marco.

Trade reports indicate that Dies Irae grossed around Rs 12 crore on its opening day worldwide, including paid premieres which began on October 30. The film maintained its strong numbers through Saturday, and advance bookings also seemed positive.

In Kerala, the film has grossed Rs 10 crore in just two days, the film has now earned a Rs 25 crore, according to trade analysts. Unni Mukundan's Marco, which was promoted as one of the most violent films, earned about Rs 14 crore in its opening weekend. Interestingly, both are A-certified Malayalam films.

Dies Irae stars Pranav as Rohan, a young man whose seemingly extravagant life spirals out of control following a mysterious death that forces him to confront his fears. The film also stars Gibin Gopinath, Sushmita Bhat, Jaya Kurup and Arun Ajikumar. The film marks Rahul’s third consecutive success in the horror space after Bhoothakaalam and Bramayugam. Vineeth Sreenivasan, who directed Pranav Mohanlal in his last film Varshangalkku Shesham, called it "a must watch". Vineeth said that Pranav's act in the film is "menacing". The filmmaker also poured appreciation to Dies Irae director Rahul and composer Christo Xavier. Arjun Ashokan, the lead actor of one Sumathi Valavu, said that the film is "another masterpiece from Rahul Sadasivan". On the other hand, Manju Warrier, wrote, "Loved it!!! This one is going to give you chills!!!"The film is written and directed by Rahul Sadasivan, and produced by Chakravarthy Ramachandra and S Sashikanth under the banners Night Shift Studios and YNOT Studios.
