Will Byers' coming out scene to family and friends
In Vol 2, when
Will Byers tries to connect back into the hive mind to locate the missing Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher), Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) discovers him and traps his mind in the Upside Down. He tells Will that he has been a good "spy" for him in the past and confirms one past plot point: that it was him that made all those underground tunnels in Hawkins. Vecna also uses Will to find out the location of Max's (Sadie Sink) body in the real world. In episode 7, a worried Will is distraught about how much control he is gaining in his mind. Before they head out to execute the grand plan to take Vecna down, Will tells his mother, Joyce (Winona Ryder), about his time with Vecna. He is also about to confess something to her when he is interrupted by Mike (Finn Wolfhard). Suddenly Will decides that he will tell everyone together to get it off his chest.
An emotional Will tears up while confessing, "I haven’t told any of you this because I don’t want you to see me differently. But the truth is, I am different. I’m like you in almost every way …. I don’t like girls. I mean, I do. Just not like you guys do." Will also shares that he has a crush on someone who doesn't like him the same way that he does. The reason why Will decided to speak up was he was afraid of the vision Vecna showed him about everyone leaving him. So he decided to confront that fear by letting his loved ones know. Joyce and his brother Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) offer unconditional support, as does the rest of the gang. His queer mentor Robin (Maya Hawke), who knew his secret from before, looks emotional and proud at his coming out.
Noah Schnapp on Will's important scene
Actor Noah Schnapp, who came out on social media in 2023, said his character's journey was also "therapeutic and cathartic" for him. He revealed that he cried when reading the scene and later texted the creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, for allowing Will to tell his identity to his friends and family during episode 7.
He told
Tudum, "I believe our journeys are pretty close in specific ways. Will definitely gave me confidence in my own life, and seeing how audiences reacted to his character made me proud of who I am publicly,” the 21-year-old actor says. “I wouldn’t be where I am without that character and seeing how people reacted and received him. So I’m very thankful that the Duffers gave me this opportunity through the years to find myself through him."
