actor Rakesh Bedi has gained newfound fame and a new fandom after the massive success of Dhurandhar: The Revenge. Known for playing Jameel Jamali in the two-part blockbuster, he has become the internet's new favourite. However, he recently spoke about the ever-changing nature of stardom and opened up about an unpleasant experience from his early career. He recalled a time when he urgently needed money while shooting for a film and asked the producer for his pending payment. However, the producer refused, saying that the cash was meant for the film’s hero. Bedi said the moment made him understand how hierarchy works in the industry, where bigger stars are often given priority.
Rakesh Bedi Recalls Being Discriminated
In an exclusive chat with
Zoom, he said,
"Mujhe yaad hai ek baar main shooting kar raha tha aur mujhe paise ki bahut zarurat thi. Aur usmein hero tha ek bada, main naam nahi loonga. Producer set pe aaya to uske haath mein paison ka packet tha. I could see that, is money in it. To maine bola, maine kaha, 'Sir, meri instalment due hai, mujhe paise chahiye.' Usne kaha, 'Yaar abhi to paise nahi hai.' To mere muh se nikal gaya, maine kaha paise to hai'. He said, 'Yaar, hero ko dene hai yeh'... And I realised ki this is how it works."Bedi added that everything has its own equity. He explained that if someone buys a share for Rs 10 and its value rises to Rs 1000 the next day, people naturally value it at Rs 1000. He said equity keeps changing, and by equity, he meant a person’s status. He added that he has already taught himself that this is the norm and one has to live with it. At the same time, he added that hierarchy may exist in the industry, but it should never become a reason to disrespect people or treat workers poorly. Rakesh said he never asks a dressman to make him wear shoes unless he is injured or in pain, as he does not feel comfortable doing so otherwise. The actor further said senior stars receive better facilities because of their stature, but that is about professional respect, not looking down on others.
