Who is Vecna?
Vecna is the main antagonist of the show Stranger Things. His name comes from the Dungeons & Dragons character. In the game he's a powerful wizard/lich who rules through his power. But in the show, his character is revealed to have a deeper connection to Hawkins and Eleven.
History of Vecna
Before he became Vecna, he was Henry Creel. As an ordinary boy, Henry discovered his psychic and psychokinetic abilities. Due to his violent tendencies, he psychologically tortured his family, eventually killing his mother and sister, which led to his father, Victor being falsely presumed to be the killer and imprisoned, further fueling his madness.
Why did Henry become Vecna?
His madness led him to be taken in by Dr. Brenner at Hawkins National Laboratory, where he became test subject Number One. His co-subject was Eleven. At the lab, he undertakes a massacre of other test subjects, until he gets banished to the Upside Down by Eleven. Over time, he transforms into the powerful, humanoid, monstrous Vecna, with vines and a terrifying, desiccated appearance, who terrorises Hawkins.
Powers of Vecna
The monster possesses psychic abilities with which he can enter the minds of his victims to torment them with their deepest fears before killing them. He keeps growing and getting stronger with each life he takes. His prime motive is to convert humanity into his subjects and the world into Upside Down.

Who plays Vecna/Henry Creel?
Netflix initially announced the character name as Peter Ballard to keep Vecna under wraps until Season 4, part 1. When revealed, we had actor Jamie Campbell Bower playing Vecna. Jamie Campbell Bower has already appeared in several supernatural/horror projects including Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, The Twilight Saga, Harry Potter and The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. The 33-year-old is also a singer associated with the band Counterfeit.
