OpenAI
has revealed its plan, revealing what it could build for artificial intelligence. The Sam Altman-led firm is bullish on making AI that helps people from managing medical bills and learning skills to caring for aging parents. The tech firm had outlined on Monday how it sees AI dominating the world and sounded alarmed about how advanced AI systems should not be in control of only a handful of organisations.
OpenAI Compares AI To Electricity
The San Francisco-based firm compared the growth of AI to the spread of electricity in the early 20th century. As per OpenAI, electricity initially solved practical problems but later changed the industries dramatically, improving living standards.
OpenAI believes that AI may follow a similar path by bringing new opportunities that could be difficult to imagine today. OpenAI mentioned that the real value of AI will not come from the technology itself but from how people use it in their lives. Moreover, the tech giant suggested AI may help individuals understand legal and financial decisions, start businesses, develop new ideas and access information more easily. The company wrote, "AI will soon be capable of extraordinary things. The point is not the technology by itself. The point is what people can do with it."
OpenAI Still Warns Against AI
Despite the optimism for the developing technology, OpenAI has stressed that AI should not replace human judgements. It said, “Powerful systems must remain safe, aligned with human intent, and subject to human control. Entirely automating everything is not the future we want.
AI should help people pursue their goals, not become untethered from them."
The tech firm notes that humans must make decisions, set goals and determine what work is worth doing. It is noteworthy that AI may help humans with their mundane tasks, but it also comes with growing concerns about safety, regulation and the concentration of power. It is yet to be seen how businesses, society and governments respond over the couple of years to determine whether AI benefits humans or becomes a major problem.
