The
recently released Amazon Prime Video series, Raakh, has piqued interest through positive reviews by the critics and audience. Based on the 1978 Ranga Billa case involving the two children of an Indian Armed Forces officer, the eight-episode show balanced emotions and raw horror depicted by the crime. Directed by Prosit Roy and created, written and co-directed by Anusha Nandakumar and Sandeep Saket, Raakh delves deeper into the emotional side of the Ranga Billa case, while Black Warrant was more about the Tihar Jail episode. The series explains the entire case in eight episodes. However, the ending is more heartbreaking than a cliffhanger. *Spoilers Ahead*
Raakh inspired by Ranga Billa case
It’s a rainy day, but Suman Arora (Divya Sharma) has to go to the radio station to perform live for a programme. Her mother, Mona Arora (Sonali Bendre), wants Sahil Arora (Vivaan Sharma) to accompany his elder sister. Their father, Lt. Col. Ashok Arora (Aamir Bashir), has promised to pick them up from the radio station at night. But before that, they go missing. When inquired, Suman and Sahil never reached the station for the programme.
SI Jayprakash (Ali Fazal) is in charge of the case. Suman and Sahil’s parents believe that they’re alive and will return home soon. However, after hours of investigation, Jayprakash discovers their brutally injured mortal remains. The post-mortem reveals horrific truths about Suman and Sahil’s deaths. Their bodies are released and the family bids them an emotional goodbye. Mona is still in disbelief and returns to work immediately. She is a teacher. While she struggles to gather herself and come to terms with the demise of her children, her husband appoints a private investigator who concludes that Suman was sexually harassed.
Who are the criminals
On the other hand, Jayprakash is about to lose the case to a senior for not producing evidence promptly. Considering it is a high-profile case, he is expected to deliver results and track Babu (
Akash Makhija) and Rajjo (Ramandeep Yadav), who are the primary accused in the case. They are on the run. Jayprakash has a few hours to give his best in solving the case and locating a green coloured car, which is important evidence.
As and when Jayprakash and his team find themselves closer to Babu and Rajjo, they have taken 10 steps forward. From family members to friends, the Delhi police relentlessly work on tracking them.
Will Ali Fazal arrest the criminals
Amid this, Jayprakash finds the weapon used to kill Suman and Sahil. As part of his investigation, he goes to Mumbai to meet Babu’s mother. His backstory is revealed. Babu is a hot-headed man who is back from the juvenile jail after spending years in a case involving the death of his schoolmate. He hasn’t changed. Rajjo, his partner, isn’t respected at home. His father often abuses him, his mother and his sister, physically and verbally. Babu and Rajjo had been on the run for almost a week before murdering Suman and Sahil in Delhi. They travel from Mumbai to the national capital.
Raakh ending
After connecting the dots, Jayprakash finally catches hold of Babu and Rajjo. They are sent to the Tihar jail. The final episode of
Raakh reveals what happened with Suman and Sahil. Despite initial hesitation, they decide to take a lift to the radio station. Babu has his eyes on Suman. She feels uncomfortable. The scuffle begins when he appreciates the earrings gifted by her mother. Suman resists and asks them to drop them immediately. The Arora kids defend themselves until Sahil is critically injured. Rajjo kills him. Suman escapes and sees her brother dead. A few moments later, she is killed, too.
Raakh ends with Suman and Sahil enjoying the rain. Their presence will always be felt.
