Call it the onscreen chemistry of the leads or the unique plot, the show is already on its way to becoming a huge hit.For those who couldn't tune in to its first two premiere episodes on its launch weekend, here's all that happened in the storyline so far, and whether
or not IU and Byeon Woo-Seok's characters agreed to a contract marriage.
**SPOILERS**
Perfect Crown begins with setting up an alternate Korea ruled by a constitutional monarchy in the 21st century. It draws parallels between its two lead actors and the people around them. We see a strong mix of palace intrigue, emotional tension, and character-driven plot, suggesting a layered historical drama.
Perfect Crown: Episode 1 Recap
Episode 1 mainly deals with character introductions, alongside setting up of power and identity. We see a politically unstable royal court where power is carefully negotiated. Byeon plays a Grand Prince, who is a representative of the King. And since the King is still a little boy who has been dragged into the spotlight after a palace accidental fire killed his father, his uncle, Prince Ian, is taking care of affairs till he comes of age. Meanwhile, we meet IU's Seong Hui-Ju, a tough, hot-headed CEO of a K-beauty brand, highly successful in her field, but since she's an illegitimate child, she does not hold the inheritance power from her father.
Unusual marriage proposal
A turn of events lands Huiju inside the palace, under unusual or concealed circumstances, immediately hinting at a hidden identity or motive. She bumps into Prince Ian, and we get a hint that the two already know each other, even though they do not exchange pleasant vibes. Early interactions establish distrust, and their first meeting carries tension rather than romance. It ends with IU managing to arrange a rendezvous with Byeon and propose a wedding, leaving him startled. That's her only way out, to become a royalty and prove her worth to her family and the world. We also see flashes of their high school days when they did not share a friendly rapport, as competing archers and even as alums.
Perfect Crown: Episode 2 Recap
While episode 1 does not rush into action, it effectively builds curiosity through secrets and restrained storytelling. Episode 2 further raises the tension and character dynamics. Alliances begin forming within the palace. IU becomes more actively involved in court dynamics, as Byeon's motivations start to surface, though not fully revealed.
Conspiracy, betrayal within court
The episode begins with IU getting rejected by Byeon, because all he wants from his wife is "love," and IU's motives have no room for love. But fate keeps bringing them together. Byeon is on an official break, trying to find some peace from her conniving sister-in-law (Queen Mother), who does not want to see him hold any power to protect her son's position in the court. It is revealed that the Queen Mother was responsible for the fire that killed her husband. The episode introduces us to betrayal within the royal court and a larger conspiracy tied to the crown. In the meantime, we see the Prime Minister Nin Jeong-Woo (Noh Sang-Hyun) holding a friendship with IU (possibly a one-sided love), while being a close aide to Byeon, too.
We also get a hint that Byeon probably had a crush on IU from their school days, just that he was trying to act difficult this time. The relationship between the leads evolves slightly in episode 2, from suspicion to reluctant cooperation. A turn of events leaves IU and Byeon in the same hotel, and the news gets leaked, alleging a secret romance (even a premarital pregnancy). Byeon summons IU and apologises for getting dragged into the scandal. But IU is the least bothered. She says she's developed a thick skin after getting tagged as illegitimate all her life. Byeon understands the situation and announces that she must get ready to become the Grand Prince's wife, who is "up against the entire nation."
