Suriya and Trisha Krishnan's Karuppu - directed by RJ Balaji - finally released in theatres, today, May 15, after being embroiled in multiple controversies, the biggest of whuch was its unexpected release-day delays due to financial disputes. In fact, the film which was slated to have special screenings after newly minted Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay had greenlit 9am shows could not even hold them, cancelling multiple bookings and issuing refunds to fans. The highly anticipated film was scheduled for a global theatrical release with special 9an screenings across Tamil Nadu. RJ Balaji ecstatic at Karuppu screening
The official Twitter handle of Karuppu as well as Suriya Fans Club shared a video of RJ Balaji from the balcony of a theatre where he can be seen ecstatic with the film screening following multiple unprecedented delays. The director could be seen screaming in happiness and throwing his hands up in the air in victory after the film finally hit theatres. Trisha Krishnan to could be seen with him on the balcony congratulating and hugging the director along with the music director Sai Abhyankkar. Actor Karthi was also present there on the balcony.
Karuppu Delay
Following the unprecedented delay in Karuppu's release a number of stars had come out in support of the film. Among them,
Dhanush had tweeted on May 14, "Suriya sir and Karuppu deserve a proper theatrical release. I really hope the issues get resolved and the film releases in theatres soon."Dulquer Salmaan too had strongly reacted to RJ Balaji's heartbreaking video. "Cinema deserves to be celebrated on the big screen, not pushed into struggles before release," he wrote and wished the film would overcome hurdles.
RJ Balaji Opened Up On Delay
RJ Balaji had also addressed the chaos surrounding Karuppu after the film’s morning and afternoon shows were abruptly cancelled on release day. Sharing an emotional video message on social media on Thursday afternoon, the director apologised to fans who had travelled from different parts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and other states to catch the early morning screenings.
Balaji admitted that he never expected such a disruption and said he felt deeply sorry for the inconvenience caused, adding that cinema is meant to help people forget their everyday struggles, which made the cancellations even more heartbreaking for him.The filmmaker revealed that he had strongly hoped Karuppu would release smoothly on May 14 and emerge as a blockbuster. Despite the setback, he remained optimistic about the film’s future and expressed confidence that audiences would eventually embrace it. Balaji also acknowledged the hard work put in by the entire team, including Suriya, and sought forgiveness from fans for the unexpected delay.Ending his message on a hopeful note, RJ Balaji said he believed the issues would soon be resolved and hoped audiences would finally get to enjoy Karuppu in theatres by the evening shows.
