Kumar, the renowned Kollywood actor, laid his mother, Mohini Mani, to rest at an electric crematorium in Chennai’s Besant Nagar. She was 85 years old and breathed her last on Saturday, May 30, due to health-related complications. Mohini is survived by her three sons, Ajith, Anup and Anil. Their father, Subramaniam Mani, passed away in Chennai on March 24, 2023. Mohini’s cremation was a quiet affair. Several celebrities visited the bereaved family to offer condolences. The funeral took place early on Sunday, May 31.

Ajith, along with his wife Shalini, was seen at the crematorium. The Tamil actor carried his mother’s bier for the last rites. The pyre was lit quietly, with no paparazzi or media presence. Ajith thanked the people who were present for the funeral. With folded hands, he expressed gratitude to the police officers for the smooth movement from home to the crematorium.

Ajith was reportedly in Dubai when his mother, Mohini, passed away in Chennai. He was seen at the airport and rushed to his residence in the Injambakkam-Palavakkam area on the outskirts of the city. When the paparazzi tried to click videos and reached closer to his car, the actor politely declined with folded hands.

Offering condolences on social media, Vijay’s note for Ajith read, “I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of Mrs Mohini Ammaiyar, the mother of my dear friend, actor Thiru. Ajith Kumar. I pray for her soul to rest at the feet of the Almighty. I express my deepest condolences to my friend, Thiru. Ajith Kumar, who has lost the mother who stood as a shield and supported him in all walks of life, and to his family.” After Ajith reached home amid tight security, many visited him quietly to offer condolences. Several celebrities from the film fraternity, politicians and colleagues extended their support to the bereaved family.

According to reports, Mohini had memory-related issues and her health deteriorated over a period of time. Her last public appearance was on May 10 this year when she celebrated Mother’s Day with her younger son, Anil, at home.
