Born in 1931 in Gudur, Andhra Pradesh, Singeetam Srinivasa Rao’s comeback is getting attention to a career that spans over six decades. He began his journey in cinema as an assistant to legendary filmmaker KV Reddy, working on iconic films such as Mayabazar (1957). Over the years, he established himself as one of Indian cinema’s most versatile directors, working across Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, and English films. His career spans multiple genres, including social dramas, comedy, science fiction, and folklore.
Among his most celebrated films is Mayuri (1985), based on the life of classical dancer Sudha Chandran, which won a record 14 Nandi Awards. In 1987, he directed Pushpaka Vimana, a silent film starring Kamal Haasan that became a milestone in Indian cinema and was screened at the Cannes Critics’ Week. He then went on to cement his legacy with films such as Apoorva Sagodharargal (1989) and Aditya 369 (1991), one of India’s earliest successful science fiction films.

Singeetam Srinivasa Rao’s work has inspired several filmmakers, including Nag Ashwin and Prashanth Varma, both of whom have acknowledged his influence on their approach to fantasy and large-scale storytelling.
Actor Kamal Haasan also spoke about his long association with the filmmaker, saying, “I think Mayabazar was released in Chennai on April 12, 1957. Now, on June 11, two months after…that’s how it’ll feel for him, I know. Nothing has changed, and cinema is with him till today. And that’s very rare.”After his long break following Welcome Obama, his return with Sing Geetham marks more than just a comeback. The film stars Ayaan, Ahilya Bamroo, and Shalini Kondepudi in lead roles. Music is composed by Devi Sri Prasad, marking his first collaboration with Singeetam Srinivasa Rao. The screenplay has been co-written by Singeetam along with Gautami Challagulla, Shashank, Sreekar, Nanda Kishore Emani, and Rahul V. Rajeshwar. Produced by Nag Ashwin under Vyjayanthi Movies and Swapna Cinema, the film is slated for a worldwide release on June 11.
