What Is Marty Supreme All About?
Directed by Josh Safdie, Marty Supreme is set in the 1950s and follows Marty Mauser, played by
Timothee Chalamet, a table tennis player chasing his dream of becoming world champion. The character is loosely based on real-life American ping-pong legend Marty Reisman. Rather than being a simple underdog story, the film dives into the messier, more complicated side of chasing a dream.Marty is a gifted but self-sabotaging player who steals money to chase international tournaments, juggles complicated relationships, and treats life like one long high-stakes match. The film has been compared in energy and tone to director Safdie's earlier hit Uncut Gems.Marty Supreme also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A'zion, Kevin O'Leary, Tyler Okonma, Fran Drescher, and Abel Ferrara in supporting roles. Chalamet trained for six years with a coach to get the physicality of the role right, and told media that it tapped into his own pre-fame hustle.
