In the past, we have seen multiple AI models getting flagged for spreading misinformation. Now, in a recent development, researchers have found out that the latest ChatGPT 5.2 model has been citing an
unusual and controversial source for all the factual information. As per the reports, it has been revealed that ChatGPT 5.2 has been referencing Grokipedia, which is an AI-generated encyclopedia by Elon Musk. According to the testing initiated by The Guardian, ChatGPT cited Grokipedia multiple times while replying to a small set of questions, specifically the ones that are based on complex or niche topics like details about british historian Sir Richard Evans, Iran's political system, the role of Basij paramilitary force, and more. For those who are unaware, Grokipedia is the alternative to Wikipedia released in October 2025. The Entries on Grokipedia are written and updated by AI systems instead of humans. Now, the platform has been incurring a lot of criticism for being biased towards the right wing ideology and the January 6 US Capitol attack. ChatGPT referenced to claims found on Grokipedia that were controversial and not true to an extent. The report also mentioned that the issue is not only happening with ChatGPT but on other AI bots too. One of the spokespersons at OpenAI suggested that ChatGPT aims to draw from a broad range of publicly available sources and viewpoints. This will only increase the difficulties for ChatGPT as the AI model has been unable to bounce back in the market since Gemini took over everything. OpenAI went for Code Red, dropped the ChatGPT 5.2 AI model, but the model has still been unable to make a mark. And this kind of issue, like citing wrong sources, will further dilute the trust of audiences. It will be interesting to see how ChatGPT makes a comeback in this situation and overpowers Gemini in the long run.
