What is the story about?
After
four seasons on Amazon Prime Video, Jack Ryan is headed back to film. The character has previously had several big-screen outings, but since 2018, John Krasinski has portrayed the CIA analyst for the small screen. The actor is returning to play Jack again for the new adventure in Ghost War and director Andrew Bernstein spoke about why the makers returned with a compelling story for film. The filmmaker also shared his experiences of shooting Jack Ryan: Ghost War in both Dubai and London, England. Here's what he had to say.
Andrew Bernstein on transitioning from TV to film
Speaking with Zoom, Bernstein shared that the main thing they looked out for when they began the journey for the film was not to replicate what they did with the TV series. He said, "We had a really concise character-developing story that we could sort of tell in two hours as opposed to eight hours like a TV series. And that's why we made the movie because we had a great story that we thought fit into that movie format and that we could entertain the audience in a really compelling way that we hadn't done before in that format. It sort of condenses all of the action, all their storylines in a shorter amount of time, which we were excited about the creative challenge of doing that."

Bernstein, who had also directed a few episodes of the Amazon Prime Video series, revealed that he and actor Krasinski were all on the same page about the character's transition to film. He continued, "I wanted the audience to learn something new about him. And I wanted him to sort of be a reflection of the times that we're living in and sort of a continuation of what we had learned about him in the TV series. Jack now is sort of entering into a thing in this movie where he's forced to confront a new reality of what the world is like. And we were excited about that possibility. So as long as it was furthering his character, that's what we mostly talked about that it was something new to the audience." How John Krasinski embodies Jack Ryan Before Krasinski, actors Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Chris Pine, and Ben Affleck have all had a crack at playingJack Ryan. However, Bernstein felt that John was amazing as Jack Ryan. He explained, "I think it's because he sort of embodies sort of all the interesting characteristics of that character. You know, he has the smarts of an analyst, the intelligence, sort of the emotional range, sort of the vulnerability and the ability to do the great action stuff we do in these movies. So much like Harrison did and Alec did in a way John has that all over the place in terms of his ability to do all those different things. And I think that's what's great about the character is that he has such range. You can believe him in a really great emotional scene, but also believable sort of in a big action scene." The action film has several heart-pounding chase sequences on two different continents. While they were all challenging to shoot, nothing ever went wrong. Bernstein added, "Dubai offers its own challenges in terms of sort of shooting on the water and doing a boat chase there. London, similarly, with a big car chase and shutting down central London. So, the fun of it, honestly, is that they all have their own unique challenges. Nothing went horribly wrong. Thank God! A lot of preparation and time goes into the doing the making of all these different stunt sequences. But the fun part is again, we sort of ground them in really interesting locations. So, those always come with their own challenges."
Jack Ryan: Ghost War releases on Amazon Prime Video on May 20, 2026. But Bernstein is hopeful that audiences will see Jack again even after the film. "We all love making these movies. We're one big Jack Ryan family and our hope is that we get to make more of them," he concluded.Wendell Pierce and Michael Kelly return as James Greer and Mike November, respectively, while Sienna Miller joins the cast as MI6 agent Emma Marlow. Aaron Rabin and Krasinski have co-written the screenplay of Jack Ryan: Ghost War.
