Last
year, Amazon Prime Video's The Summer I Turned Pretty series ended after its third season. But the story of Belly (Lola Tung), Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) is set to continue with a surprise film that was announced a day after the show ended. However, before the movie is about to begin filming in Wilmington, North Carolina, on April 27, 2026, a shocking report suggests that the young cast of The Summer I Turned Pretty was forced to sign on to the film "under duress" in hopes of receiving a pay bump for the third season.
Salary issues behind the scenes of The Summer I Turned Pretty
According to a report in
Deadline, the young cast of
The Summer I Turned Pretty, including Tung, Briney and Casalegno, as well as Sean Kaufman and Rain Spencer, only got a salary raise because they had to agree to be part of the film too. Kaufman plays Belly’s older brother Steven, and Spencer is her best friend Taylor. The five young rising stars received around $35,000 to $40,000 per episode for Season 1 of
The Summer I Turned Pretty. Created and executive produced by author Jenny Han, the Amazon Prime Video series grew in Season 2 and became a cultural phenomenon with Season 3. Celebrities and international brands were split into Team Conrad and Team Jeremiah and often went viral on social media. The show is co-produced by indie studio Wiip and Amazon MGM Studios. Before the salary renegotiations on Season 3 with Wiip that made the talent deals in coordination with Amazon, the actors were asked to commit to a movie during the final stages.
Sources state that some of the stars were not wanting to do the film but they were promised a salary raise only if they signed up for a film. Wiip did not back down on the film and all the actors ultimately agreed to the feature. The report further added that some of the lead actors "felt “forced” to accept the modified terms with their raises in jeopardy, signing the deals “under duress.”"
The three leads reportedly made $100K an episode for Season 3 and Tung, as the main protagonist, earned more than her male co-stars during the three seasons of the Amazon Prime Video series. For the film, under the renegotiated contracts, the cast is receiving three times their episodic salary to act in the streaming sequel.
