Tech
giant OpenAI is making headlines again, as it may show personalised ads to users, based on limited information it is likely to share with third-party platforms to promote ChatGPT and Codex on other websites, as per Wired. In simple words, the company may use cookies to market its service on other platforms. For those unaware, cookies are packets of data that let websites and advertisers spot individual web surfers and track their browsing habits.
Cookies Expected To Power Ads
According to a Wired report,
OpenAI sent an email to users about its changed policies on April 30 in the US and stated that the company could use cookies to advertise its products on their websites and apps. The company told the publication that it will not share user conversations with advertisers or marketing partners. It stressed that user chats will remain private and will not be used for ads. However, as per the mail to the users, it may share ‘limited information’ such as device identifiers or cookie IDs to understand how people interact with services and could measure how effective its ads could be. For example, if a user checks an ad for Codex on any social media platform and signs up, OpenAI could use these identifiers to link the ad to that action. This move could follow OpenAI’s efforts to grow its revenue through Codex and
ChatGPT. Reportedly, the American tech giant is testing ads within ChatGPT responses for several users in the US.
