While the teaser titled Rama gave a sneak peek into the life of Sri Rama, from being a prince to his exile, the movie is expected to be action-packed with magnificent VFX. However, amid all the spellbinding moments, the fact that the makers chose to call the godly character 'Maryada Purushottam' might leave many emotional. But, do you know exactly why Lord Rama is called that?
What does Maryada Purushottam mean?
The term Maryada Purushottam is made up of two words - Maryada and Purushottam. For the unversed, while 'Maryada' means moral limits, ethics, social and personal boundaries, 'Purushottam' stands for the greatest among men. So, together, it means, 'the supreme man who always lives within the highest moral code.'
Why is Lord Rama called Maryada Purushottam?
The term has become synonymous with Lord Rama, as it reflects his role as the ideal human being who always upholds righteousness and moral boundaries.Lord Rama is known for his unwavering commitment to Dharma. In the Ramayana, Rama consistently chooses dharma or duty, morals, and societal order over personal happiness. He accepts 14 years of exile without protest to abide by his father's promise. Even while being away from the palace, he never lets emotions override his responsibilities as a king, son, and a leader.
Representation of highest ideal of a human
For his followers, Rama embodies perfection in every role he plays, from obeying his father Dasharatha without question to being devoted to his wife Sita and even putting his kingdom and people above himself. Since his ways are categorised as guidelines for a 'Ram Rajya', he becomes a model for how a person should act in society.During his great war with Ravana, he upholds his ethical code of conduct, even while showing respect for his enemy. Lord Rama has always made sure that his actions follow maryada and he puts that above his personal desire. Infact, unlike other divine figures, Rama has lived the life as a human, while balancing humanity and divinity.
Combining all these reasons brings Lord Rama the title of Maryada Purushottam. The makers of Ramayana have followed that and even addressed Ranbir Kapoor's character in a similar fashion, even in the teaser.Ramayana is set to release on Diwali this year.
