Karthik Subbaraj returned to theaters in 2023 with Jigarthanda DoubleX, starring Raghava Lawrence and SJ Suryah. The film is the second film the Jigarthanda franchise. Karthik Subbaraj has confirmed plans to make the third part of Jigarthanda, though production is not expected to start immediately. He already has a story in mind, and this announcement has sparked excitement among fans eager for the next installment of the franchise. Karthik Subbaraj revealed that Jigarthanda 3 will feature a cast of newcomers and will be set in Madurai.
The director, who last helmed Retro with Suriya, has been actively supporting new talent through his production banner, Stone Bench, collaborating with up-and-coming directors and innovative scripts. While details about his next projects aren't fully disclosed. Karthik Subbaraj has revealed that an independent film featuring debut actors is currently in post-production and will be showcased on festival circuits before a theatrical release in India. Additionally, Karthik Subbaraj has shared that he is developing ideas for a sequel to Mahaan. The project is still in its early stages, and the filmmaker also revealed that Mahaan 2 is also in the works, and details of it will be out between 2027–202. The film starred Chiyaan Vikram and Dhruv Vikram.
About Jigarthanda Franchise
The original Jigarthanda (2014), starring Siddharth and Bobby Simha, is a crime comedy about an aspiring filmmaker who researches gangster Assault Sethu discreetly. When Sethu discovers the truth, chaos ensues, blending comedy, tension, and thrilling sequences. The film was inspired by the 2006 South Korean film A Dirty Carnival and became a cult classic. Jigarthanda DoubleX (2023) explored a prequel set in the 1970s. The story followed an ex-convict promised a policeman job, tasked with killing a gangster while undercover as a filmmaker. With leads Raghava Lawrence and SJ Suryah, supported by Nimisha Sajayan and others, the film was both a critical and commercial hit. It is currently streaming on Netflix.
Apart from Jigarthanda 3, Karthik Subbaraj is working on a new indie project featuring debut actors. He recently directed the romantic action thriller Retro, starring Suriya and Pooja Hegde, which follows a young man torn between his violent past and love.
