The demise of Malayalam actor, filmmaker, and screenwriter Sreenivasan has left the entire nation in a state of remorse. The widely respected artist passed away on Saturday at the age of 69, leaving behind
an extraordinary legacy that shaped the course of Malayalam cinema for decades. Post his demise, Kerala is set to bid a solemn farewell to Sreenivasan with full police honours on Sunday, following a decision by the state government to accord him ceremonial respect at his funeral.According to official sources, the final rites will be conducted on December 21 at Sreenivasan’s residence in Udayamperoor, Kandanad, located in the Ernakulam district. The state government formally conveyed its decision through an official advisory issued by the Secretary to the Government. The advisory expressed deep condolences over his passing and acknowledged his immense and lasting contributions to the film industry.

In its statement, the government noted, “Government have learnt with profound grief the demise of Shri Sreenivasan, renowned Malayalam actor, scriptwriter and filmmaker. He had won numerous awards, including a National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues for Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala and six Kerala State Film Awards.” The message showcased his remarkable achievements and the respect he has across generations of filmmakers and audiences.
On Sreenivasan's wreath laying ceremony
As part of the official tribute, the District Collector has been directed to lay wreaths on behalf of the state, while the Commissioner of Police has been instructed to ensure ceremonial honours at the funeral, including a traditional bugle salute. These gestures reflect the high regard in which Sreenivasan was held not only as an artist but also as a cultural figure of national importance.Members of the film fraternity, political leaders, and admirers from across the state joined in mourning his death. Actor and screenwriter Renji Panicker informed that Sreenivasan’s mortal remains would first be kept at his residence before being taken to the Town Hall, where the public can pay their last respects from 1 pm.
