Veteran Bengali actor Kalyan Chatterjee, one of the most familiar faces of Bengali cinema, passed away at the age of 81. The West Bengal Motion Picture Artists Forum confirmed the news on Monday, marking
the end of a remarkable journey in films.Chatterjee had been admitted to MR Bangur Super Speciality Hospital, where he was receiving treatment for typhoid and other age-related health issues. Despite continuous medical care, he breathed his last late on Sunday night, leaving the industry and fans in deep sorrow.The Artists Forum said in a statement, "One of our most valued members, Kalyan ji has left us. We are deeply shocked. May his soul rest in peace."

Kalyan Chatterjee built a long and successful career, acting in more than 400 films over several decades. Known for his powerful screen presence, he became one of Bengali cinema’s most trusted character actors. His journey began with Aponjon in 1968, and from there, he continued to impress audiences with his natural acting style and strong supporting roles.He delivered memorable performances in films such as Dhanyee Meye, Dui Prithibi, Sabuj Dwiper Raja, and Baishe Srabon. Chatterjee also had the honour of working with legendary director Satyajit Ray in Pratidwandi. Beyond Bengali cinema, he appeared in Hindi films too, including Sujoy Ghosh’s popular thriller Kahaani. His wide range of work and dedication to his craft made him a respected name across Indian cinema.His contemporaries include Soumitra Chatterjee, Sabitri Chattopadhyay and Dipankar De.
