US-based tech giant Meta has launched a new tool to inform you when someone steals your content on Facebook and Instagram, aimed at supporting content creators who face the challenge of content theft.
This mobile-only feature, named Facebook Content Protection, alerts creators when it detects copied reels, allowing them to take appropriate action before the content spreads across both platforms. Here's everything you need to know. How The Tool WorksThe Facebook Content Protection tool functions by notifying creators when a reel that resembles their original content is identified. Upon receiving a notification, creators have several options: they can block the copied reel's visibility, track its performance, add attribution links, or choose to release the claim if they do not mind it remaining online. Additionally, creators can maintain an "allow list" for partners or individuals they have previously permitted to reuse their content. However, it is essential to note that content tracking on Instagram is only available when creators post their reels on Facebook, either directly or by using the "Share to Facebook" option. Once the original reel is uploaded to Facebook, the tool begins scanning for similar content across both Facebook and Instagram.Enhanced Originality On Social MediaMeta's initiative to enhance originality on its platforms is particularly relevant as the competition for short-form video content intensifies. Earlier this year, the company reported removing 10 million impersonating profiles and taking action against 500,000 accounts involved in spam or fake engagement. With the introduction of this new tool, Meta aims to ensure that original creators receive the recognition they deserve.ALSO READ: Apple iOS 26.2 Beta 3 Released: Check Full List Of New Features, Hidden Changes And How To Install ItThe tool is automatically available for creators enrolled in Meta's Content Monetisation programme who meet the platform's originality and integrity standards. Creators using the Rights Manager will also have access to this feature. Eligible users will receive prompts in their Feed, Professional Dashboard, or profile, while others can find the "Content Protection" section in the dashboard or apply through Meta's website.Preventing Misuse Of The ToolInterestingly, blocking a stolen reel only affects its reach, meaning the account that posted the copied content will not face penalties. This measure is designed to prevent the tool from being misused to target users unfairly. However, creators are also prohibited from falsely reporting cases, as such actions may lead to restrictions or loss of access to the feature.Creators can dispute cases where someone else wrongfully claims their work through Meta's intellectual property reporting channel or by using the "Can’t find a specific match?" option if the system fails to identify a match.Future DevelopmentsCurrently, the Facebook Content Protection tool operates exclusively within the mobile app. However, the tech giant has confirmed that it is exploring the possibility of extending this feature to the desktop's Professional Dashboard in the future.
