OpenAI has started rolling out group chats inside ChatGPT to everyone signed in, Free, Go, Plus and Pro users worldwide. Think of it as a shared workspace where friends, family or colleagues can brainstorm together while ChatGPT chips in. It’s handy for planning trips, splitting chores, designing a room or even running quick team decisions without everyone juggling separate threads. How To Start A Group ChatStarting is intentionally simple: open any new or existing chat and tap the people icon in the top-right corner. If you add someone to an existing one, ChatGPT will make a copy and open that as a new group chat so your original private conversation stays untouched. You can invite people via a sharable link and add up to twenty participants,
enough for a big family plan, a small project team.Profiles And Privacy BasicsThe first time you create or join a group, you’ll be asked to set a short profile , a name, username and photo, so everybody knows who’s who. Group chats are opt-in: you must accept an invite to join, and everyone in the group can see who the participants are. Your personal ChatGPT memory isn’t used inside groups and group chats don’t create new memories, which helps keep private preferences out of shared spaces.ALSO READ: Android Phone Users Can Now Share Photos With iPhones Using AirDrop: Here’s How, Eligible DevicesHow ChatGPT Behaves In GroupsChatGPT in groups tries to be a good conversationalist: it follows the flow, jumps in when relevant, and stays quiet when people are talking. If you want it to respond, mention “ChatGPT” in your message. Responses are generated by GPT-5.1 Auto, which picks the best model depending on the prompt and the plan of the person being replied to. Note that rate limits apply when ChatGPT responds, and those counts are charged to the individual it’s replying to, not to the whole group.Custom Instructions and Collaboration TipsEach group chat can have its own custom instructions that shape tone and detail level, so you can make the bot formal for work planning or playful for weekend trip ideas. Treat the group as a living document: pin a consensus, ask ChatGPT to summarise decisions, or have it compare options side-by-side. If someone needs to leave, group members can remove participants (the creator can only be removed if they choose to leave).
