The
American actress of Indian origin, Supriya Ganesh, is leaving HBO Max's The Pitt. The critically acclaimed series was renewed for a third season in January 2026. But after the release of the 13th episode of Season 2, a report revealed that Supriya's character Dr. Samira Mohan will not be returning for Season 3. Instead, Ayesha Harris, who plays Dr. Parker Ellis, will be upped to a series regular role. Created by R Scott Gemmill, the critically acclaimed series The Pitt won five Emmy Awards last year, including Best Drama and Best Casting. Here's why Supriya Ganesh has been written out of the show.
Supriya Ganesh to leave after The Pitt Season 2
According to a report in
Variety, Supriya Ganesh, who plays senior resident Dr. Samira Mohan in the medical drama, will leave
The Pitt after
Season 2. While her character will depart, another character, Dr Parker Ellis from the night shift, is being promoted to a series regular role for the third season. The announcement caught fans by surprise, as Supriya's character has become a fan favourite.
On social media, upset fans were convinced that the actress was let go from the series and even lamented that it felt like a cruel April Fool's prank. However, the format of the medical series, which takes place over a single day on a 15-hour shift, means that not every character can make the cut. Last year, there was a similar uproar when British actress Tracy Ifeachor, who plays senior resident Dr. Heather Collins, was also let go due to the story.
The Pitt is Supriya's first lead role and she and her castmates won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series at the Actor Awards this year for Season 1. On Instagram, actresses Lilly Singh and Poorna Jagannathan shared words of support for the young actress.
Why Dr Samira Mohan will not return
Since the beginning of the shift taking place on July 4 in the second season, Dr Mohan has been on edge and had a panic attack while working. Her character is a fourth-year senior resident applying for new internships and has been having arguments with her mother behind the scenes as well. A few characters have suggested that she would be better suited to the geriatrics field.
Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center is a teaching hospital so it makes sense that there would be characters who come in and leave. After Ifeachor's exit, Sepideh Moafi as Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi was added to the cast. There are still two more episodes left in the second season of
The Pitt. The series is set to end on April 16, 2026, with its Season 2 finale.
