Amid Janhvi Kapoor's Peddi Row, Kangana Ranaut Says Female Actors Must Speak Up Against Objectification

backlash over Janhvi Kapoor's portrayal in Ram Charan's Peddi quickly escalated into a full-blown controversy. So much so that director Buchi Babu Sana had to come forward to apologise and promise to make changes to the scenes that were called out. Now, while promoting her upcoming film Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata, Kangana Ranaut has spoken out about the objectification of female actors in movies. She said that if a female actor feels a scene isn't working, she should be able to communicate that to the makers.

Kangana Ranaut On Objectification Of Women In Films

While Kangana Ranaut did not directly address the Peddi controversy, she spoke from her experience and told PTI, "By and large, as per my experience, it has always been that when I agree to do a film, there are so many various perspectives… you can bring light to that and say, ‘Thoda sa aisa bhi sound kar raha hain yeh’. They may not want to objectify or something, but aise toh koi bhi filmein nahi banana chah raha hain ki aao inko objectify kare."

Kangana stated that no director or writer go out with the intention of making a film that objectifies women, but if a female actor feels so, she must take it up with them."I have seen that the makers do not think like that. As a woman, one can put their perspective that this is looking different, that it is not looking good. Mostly, the others will agree with you. Because while writing, the same set of room had not thought of it like that. So things like that can happen. When one has said yes to a film, it is a collaboration," the Queen star said.

Ram Charan's film Peddi took a bumper start at the box office, but it quickly got caught in a storm over how Janhvi Kapoor's character, Achiyamma, was shown on screen. Many viewers felt that the opening scenes focused too much on Achiyamma's body instead of building her personality. Another scene also showed the lead character forcing a kiss on her without her agreement.Director Buchi Babu Sana posted an apology, saying it was never his intention to objectify or disrespect any female character, and promised to make changes to the disputed scenes. Singer Sona Mohapatra also weighed in, criticising what she called 'toxic masculinity' being sold as romance in films.
