The legendary woods of Maryland are reopening for a new generation. A new chapter in the iconic horror franchise The Blair Witch Project is taking shape, and this time, it comes with a notable shift, that of bringing back the original creative voices of the cult horror film. Lionsgate and Blumhouse have announced that the upcoming reboot will feature the involvement of the 1999 film’s original stars and directors. This comes after years of frustration and public criticism over the architects of the original nightmare being excluded from previous sequels. The original film, written, directed, and edited by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, is categorised as a found footage psychological folk horror film. The new film, backed by Lionsgate in collaboration
with Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster, will be directed by rising horror filmmaker Dylan Clark. The script was originally written by Chris Thomas Devlin, with Clark currently revising it. While plot details remain tightly under wraps, the film is being described as a fresh reimagining intended to introduce the legendary story to a new generation.
Bringing back original team
In a significant development, original cast members Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams have joined the project as executive producers. They are joined by the original film’s creators—directors Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Myrick, along with producer Gregg Hale—marking the first time that core members of the original team will have meaningful involvement in a follow-up project.
About The Blair Witch Project
The Blair Witch Project is one of the most successful independent horror films of all time. It is a pseudo-documentary in which three young students (Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, and Joshua Leonard) hike into the Appalachian Mountains near Burkittsville, Maryland, to shoot a documentary about a local myth known as the Blair Witch, only to mysteriously disappear.Released in 1999, it revolutionised filmmaking with its found-footage style and ultra-low budget. Made at approximately $35,000, its innovative marketing and realistic storytelling blurred the line between fiction and reality, helping it become a cultural phenomenon. The movie went on to gross nearly $248 million worldwide, making it one of the most profitable films in cinema history.
Outrage against reboot
The decision to bring back the original team of the movie comes after years of tension surrounding the franchise. When the reboot was first announced in 2024, Leonard publicly criticized the decision to proceed without consulting the original team, calling it decades of “disrespect.” Others associated with the original film echoed similar sentiments, noting that earlier sequels—including 2000’s Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 and the 2016 follow-up—failed to capture the magic of the original, partly due to the absence of its creators.Despite its massive success, the original cast and crew reportedly received minimal financial rewards, a point that has fueled longstanding grievances. Over time, several members have spoken openly about feeling overlooked and underappreciated, particularly as the franchise continued without their input.
Renewed collab to restore trust in franchise
The renewed collaboration suggests the studio's effort to bridge that gap and restore authenticity to the franchise. It also reflects a broader recognition of the original film’s groundbreaking impact on the horror genre.Production for the reboot is reportedly being planned for later this year, with a budget estimated at around $10 million, significantly higher than the original, yet modest by modern studio standards. James Wan and Jason Blum are among the producers attached to the project, alongside Roy Lee, further strengthening its horror pedigree. While there is no official release date yet, the reboot is expected to generate strong interest, particularly given the renewed involvement of the original team. Whether it can recapture the raw fear and cultural impact of the 1999 film remains to be seen, but for the first time in decades, the voices that started it all will help shape the story's next chapter.
