Meta
is not looking to hire coders now. Rather, the company has announced a new workforce training programme in the United States to help people learn skilled trade jobs required for building data centres. As per The Wall Street Journal, the company will offer free training and guaranteed employment to successful candidates. This initiative is reportedly called Workforce Academy, which will start this year in Louisiana, Ohio, Indiana and Texas as the Zuckerberg-led company continues to work on its AI infrastructure.
Free Five-Week Course With Job Guarantee
As per WSJ, this
training programme will run for five weeks. The company reportedly notes that the participants will not have to pay any fees and they will get job opportunities at its data centre construction sites after they complete the course. Moreover, the company is also reportedly investing $115 million into the programme in 2026 as part of its plan to grow demand for skilled workers. It is crucial to note that the
rise of AI and cloud computing has also led to the growing demand for data centres. These facilities need large amounts of electricity and advanced cooling systems, which further increase the demand for workers such as electricians, HVAC technicians and fibre installers.
Meta is reportedly investing heavily in data centres. One of its notable projects is Hyperion, developed in Louisiana, and it is expected to be among the largest data centre campuses in the company. This is not the company’s first attempt to address labour shortages. Previously, the tech giant introduced a separate fibre-installation training programme, which attracted thousands of applications within days of launch. The company’s latest programmes show how the AI boom is once again creating labour shortages. As big tech players race to build the physical infrastructure required for AI, demand for skilled trade workers is likely to grow significantly.
