Thailavar 173: Makers Of Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan Film Celebrate 'Two Kings' Decades Of Friendship' With New Promos

Legendary actors Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth's upcoming collab Thalaivar 173 recently made headlines. The Chachi 420 actor had officially confirmed the long-rumoured reunion with Rajinikanth by announcing

a new film under his production banner, Raaj Kamal Films International (RKFI). The film will be directed by Sundar C, though Kamal will only serve as the producer, putting to rest earlier speculations about the two starring together. Now, the makers of the film have treated fans to new promos celebrating two decades of friendship between the legends.

Thalaivar 173 makers celebrate Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan's friendship with new promos

On Sunday, the team shared a special video showing Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, and Sundar C meeting to finalise the project. The video captures Rajinikanth stepping out of his car and entering the RKFI office with his signature swagger, followed by Kamal Haasan and Sundar C. The trio is then welcomed with shawls by Mahendran, and Kamal Haasan expresses his excitement about reuniting with his colleagues.From their black-and-white era to the golden days of Tamil cinema, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan remain iconic pillars of the industry. The film, tentatively titled Thalaivar 173, is expected to release during Pongal 2027.

In the video, Kamal Haasan also shared a poetic note in Tamil, which reads, "As wind, rain, and river, we will shower, we will be happy, and we will live." In another promo, makers wrote, "Decades of Friendship, a Lifetime of Respect. Superstar Rajinikanth joins Kamal Haasan’s Raaj Kamal Films International, under the direction of Sundar C for #Thalaivar173 #Pongal2027."

About Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan's partnership

This collaboration comes after Rajinikanth had expressed his desire to work with Kamal again at the audio launch of Coolie. Though it’s uncertain if the two will appear together on screen, their last collaboration was in Thillu Mullu (1981) in Tamil and Geraftaar (1985) in Hindi. Their partnership dates back to the 1970s, with their first film together being Rajinikanth’s debut, Apoorva Raagangal (1975). Other memorable films they’ve worked on together include Moondru Mudichu, Pathinaru Vayathinile, Aadu Puli Attam, Ilamai Oonjal Aadukirathu, Thappu Thalangal, Aval Appadithaan, Alavuddinum Arbutha Vilakkum, and Ninaithale Inikkum.

Sundar C's work front

Sundar C, who last directed Rajinikanth in Arunachalam (1997), has also worked with Kamal in Anbe Sivam (2003). Currently, he is working on Mookuthi Amman 2 with Nayanthara in the lead. Details about the rest of the cast and crew for Thalaivar 173 have yet to be revealed, but the film will be produced by Kamal Haasan and R. Mahendran under the RKFI banner and distributed by Red Giant Movies.Thalaivar 173 is set to hit theatres for Pongal 2027, marking a major milestone in Tamil cinema’s ongoing legacy.
