Anil
Kapoor’s Nayak is the most precious gem that rests at the top of his crown. A film that broke stereotypes, Shankar’s film completes 25 years in September. Ahead of it, rumours are rife that Anil has acquired the rights held by producer Deepak Mukut. Originally produced by A S Rathnam, the political drama co-starring the late Amrish Puri and Rani Mukerji, might get a sequel soon. However, the actor is yet to make an official announcement. Nayak released in 2001. It was a remake of Shankar's own 1999 Tamil film, Mudhalvan, headlined by Arjun and Manisha Koirala.
Nayak sequel in the making?
A source close to the development told Bollywood Hungama, “Producer Deepak Mukut of Sanam Teri Kasam fame held the rights to Nayak. It is said that Anil Kapoor has bought the rights from him. He plans to hold the rights as it’s a film close to his heart. Also, he aspires to make a sequel to it. He is fully aware of the love he has garnered for the film over the years and believes that the subject of Nayak has tremendous potential for a second part.”
About Nayak
Nayak was the story of a television reporter, who gets challenged to become the Chief Minister for day and run the state. The film featured an ensemble cast including Paresh Rawal, Saurabh Shukla, Johny Lever, Shivaji Satam and Neena Kulkarni. In a previous interview with Hindustan Times, Anil revealed Nayak came to him after Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan declined it. “I pursued Shankar (director) after Nayak was passed up by both Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh. To this date, I’m glad I did. Honestly, all we knew while making the film was that it would be something special. Something for the ages. We had no clue it would gain the kind of traction that it did. I think it’s the subject matter that is just so relevant and relatable. The people, the government and the tensions therein will always remain a topic of great interest and personal relevance,” the actor said. An official announcement about
Nayak’s sequel is awaited.
