Ram
Charan’s anticipated sports action drama Peddi has landed in the middle of a controversy ahead of its June 4 release. Single-screen theatre owners across Telangana are threatening not to screen the film unless producers agree to a new revenue-sharing system. This first appeared to be an issue involving only a few theatres in Hyderabad however, now this has expanded into a statewide dispute involving exhibitors across the Nizam region. Theatre owners are saying that the current rental-based model is financially unsustainable due to rising operational costs. Peddi, is touted to have a big opening in Telugu-speaking states.
Trouble For Ram Charan’s Peddi? Why Single Screen Theatres Are Refusing To Release Film - Issue Explained
Members of the film industry, are hoping Peddi's release will revive the struggling theatrical business after months of poor box office performance. However, just weeks before release, the film has become the centre of a major conflict between exhibitors and producers in Telangana.
According to exhibitors, theatres throughout Telangana may refuse to screen Peddi unless a new financial model is introduced. The situation has raised concerns within the Telugu film industry because Peddi is considered crucial for both theatres and producers struggling after a dry box office season.
What Is the Issue About?
The dispute is the ongoing disagreement over how theatrical revenue should be shared between producers and exhibitors. Currently, many Telugu films operate under a rental-based system, where theatres pay fixed rental amounts regardless of a film’s performance. Exhibitors are saying that that this model is no longer sustainable, especially for single-screen theatres facing rising operational expenses.
Theatre owners claim that daily running costs now range between Rs 12,000 and Rs 18,000, making it increasingly difficult to survive under the present system. They are demanding a percentage-based revenue-sharing model instead. Under the proposed structure, exhibitors want 60 percent revenue share during the first week, 50 percent in the second week, and 40 percent from the third week onward. Theatre owners say this system is already followed in several other parts of India and would help protect struggling cinemas in Telangana.
Mythri Movie Makers Oppose the Proposal
Among the production houses involved, Mythri Movie Makers has reportedly emerged as one of the strongest opponents of the exhibitors’ proposed plan. Since the banner is presenting Peddi worldwide, the disagreement has grown more ahead of the film’s release. Exhibitors insist they are not targeting Peddi specifically, but are using the film’s release period to push for long-pending changes.
