Ranveer Singh, Dhurandhar's Hamza Ali Mazari aka Jaskirat Singh Rangi, might next be seen playing Lord Shiva in The Immortals of Meluha. While Ranbir Kapoor is turning Lord Ram for Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana, Ranveer is seemingly taking stakes high. In what could be considered a massive cinematic venture for the actor, whose currently expecting his second child with wife Deepika Padukone, has reportedly hopped on the film adaptation of the bestselling novel by Amish Tripathi. The original trilogy could, in all probability, become a three-part franchise as well. The movie, which was first announced in January 2012 by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, was put on the back burner for several reasons. With the mammoth success of Aditya Dhar's Dhurandhar and Dhurandhar 2:
The Revenge, Ranveer seems to be willing to take the plunge.
Ranveer Singh buys The Immortals of Meluha rights?
On May 11, Pinkvilla reported that Ranveer has acquired the rights to The Immortals of Meluha by Amish Tripathi for a huge sum, which has been kept under wraps. The movie would be backed by his own production banner, Maa Kasam Film. The report further stated that the adaptation was currently under development, and Ranveer has partnered with Aditya Birla's Birla Studios to develop the mythological epic as a grand-scale trilogy.
What do we know about speculated adaptation?
As per speculation, the 40-year-old actor has been keen on turning Amish Tripathi's books for the big screen for a long time. The fantasy novel was currently in the writing stage. "The acquisition happened recently, and the project is now officially under development. The first part is expected to go on floors in 2028," the publication quoted a source. As per the plan, the source material would be converted into three films as a cinematic universe. While Ranveer will also lead the trilogy in the central role of Lost Shiva, the starcast and director will get locked once the script and its world-building are in place.
The Immortals of Meluha's screen adaptations timeline
The Immortals of Meluha is a three-part fantasy novel by Indian writer Amish Tripathi. Set in 1900 BC, it reimagines Lord Shiva as a human Tibetan immigrant. Shiva arrives in the near-perfect empire of Meluha, where he is believed to be the "Neelkanth" - a prophesied savior destined to fight the Chandravanshis and protect the land from the evil Nagas. When Karan Johar first announced adapting The Immortals of Meluha in 2012, it was rumoured that it would be titled Shuddhi and Karan Malhotra would helm it. Though the two projects later turned out to be different ones. Amish Tripathi also claimed that a Hollywood producer had bought the rights for an American version of the film. This left speculation divided about KJo's position. Later reports stated that Karan Malhotra was adapting the story into a film script, with Tripathi acting as creative consultant. However, in May 2017, Dharma pulled out of the film rights due to the contract expiring. After the names of several other filmmakers, from Sanjay Leela Bhansali to Shekhar Kapur, popping up for buying the rights, Ranveer seems to have cracked the deal.
Why would it be a good decision for Ranveer?
Infact, this also seems to be a good time for the actor to experiment post the success of Dhurandhar films, which have changed the trajectory of his career. Despite his public spat with Farhan Akhtar due to exiting
Don 3, Ranveer is in a position to try a costume drama or a mythological genre, something he's never done before. This comes as the actor is already gearing up to shoot for Aditya Dhar's next from March 2027. The project is described as a massive, ambitious feature following the successful collab of the actor-director.Ranveer also has Pralay, directed by Jay Mehta, which is tentatively planned to go on floors in August 2026.
