Stranger
Things Season 5 dropped its big finale episode 8, The Rightside Up, on Netflix as a New Year's gift to fans. And some lucky viewers got an opportunity to watch the 2 hours, 5 minutes long chapter in theatres. In what showrunners, the Duffer Brothers call a cinematic experience, Netflix announced in November that it would release the finale in select cinema halls of the US and Canada. While the episode released in theatres and the OTT platform simultaneously, the makers are looking to make a lot of money through the big screens. Infact, it is noted that Stranger Things finale is currently eyeing more than $15 million gross from just over 620 theatres in the US.
Stranger things 5 Vol 3 in theatres
Ahead of its premiere, Netflix created a special theater-finder and ticketing site to help fans locate where the special event is scheduled to play in and around their area. While fans in other countries, including India,
expressed disappointment in Netflix for not bringing the mega screening in their country, it did not stop subscribers from across the world to tune in the streamer as soon as the episode dropped, leading to
Netflix crashing within minutes.
Ross Duffer had through an Instagram post revealed, "Over 1.1 million of you have already RSVPed to the finale screenings on NYE and New Year’s Day, and more than 3,500 showtimes across 620+ theaters are already completely full. What a way to close out a ten-year journey—together. Maybe we’ll see some of you in LA."
Fans back 'power of theatres'
Many took to X (formerly Twitter) and posted reactions on Stranger Things 5 Volume 3 releasing in theatres. A user wrote, "The Stranger Things finale in our local theater tonight and tomm... - $20 tickets. Showtimes every 20 minutes. During a holiday. For a show available at home on Netflix. And its nearly sold out. I hope this makes Netflix rethink the power of theaters."
Another user said, "Over 1 million tickets sold for #StrangerThings5 finale in cinemas across the US. No box office gross, but theatres will be DELIGHTED to make $15M+ from mandatory concessions and then some more. @netflix THIS IS THE WAY. Embrace the BIG SCREEN."
Stranger Things 5 Volume 3 marks the end to Netflix's flagship show after a blockbuster run of almost a decade.
