The
Night Manager brought back the characters of Jonathan Pine, played by Tom Hiddleston, and Angela Burr, played by Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman, for Season 2. However, one key player from the first season, Hugh Laurie's arms dealer Richard Roper, was missing and shown dead in the premiere episode of Season 2. But the character continued to wreak havoc from the grave, it seems as Pine headed to Colombia to stop another arms mercenary named Teddy dos Santos (Diego Calva). In the latest episode, however, creator and writer David Farr dropped a big bomb on Pine's plans. Find out what happened in The Night Manager Season 2 Episode 4. Warning: Major Spoilers Ahead!
The Night Manager Season 2 introduces new villain halfway through story
At the end of episode 3, Hiddleston's Pine spies on his new subject Teddy, who is using $20 million of his alias Matthew Ellis' money to fund a coup in his home country Colombia. At a restaurant, Teddy is meeting with an associate named Gilberto Hanson. Pine hears Hanson before he sees him and goes into shock. Hanson is actually Richard Roper, alive and well in Colombia, and back to his old ways.
Director Georgi Banks-Davies and writer David Farr make sure the reveal is shocking and
gives Pine a good kick to the system. Before, when he was dealing with just Teddy, the intelligence officer had more confidence to take him down. Now with Hanson, aka Roper, by his side, the mission is much more deadly. So how did Richard Roper survive when Pine and Angela Burr (Colman) travelled to Syria to see his dead body at a morgue? Roper faked his death and threatened to kill Burr's young daughter if she didn't confirm his death. Earlier, Pine had also discovered that Teddy is Roper's illegitimate son, and Roper is using the paternal connection to get his bidding done. So how does Pine stop him now? Viewers will have to watch what happens next in Episode 5.
Tom Hiddleston on The Night Manager Season 2's big twist
Appearing on
The One Show, the
Loki star shared, "Here's the thing about Hugh [Laurie] and Richard Roper, [the book's author] John Le Carré described the character as the worst man in the world. He's elite, privileged, the recipient of all the freedoms of British democracy and still does something very cynical, but he's played by the most charming man in the world."
He continued, "That's the great tension, the audience love Hugh Laurie, and they love him as Richard Roper. He's back and what's so exciting, where we're going now is, you realise these two characters are somehow going to confront each other again."
The Night Manager has already been renewed for Season 3.
