If
you have spent mere 5 minutes on the film side of internet today, there are chances that you have already caught the first look of Jr NTR's Dragon. The hype of the film reached a new level after the makers unveiled the film’s title glimpse on May 19, coinciding with Jr NTR’s birthday. The intense teaser immediately grabbed attention for its dark tone, violent world and the actor’s fierce transformation. Dragon marks the first-ever collaboration between Prashanth Neel and Jr NTR, two of the biggest names in Indian cinema. Now, the filmmaker has opened up about why the role is one of the riskiest choices of the actor’s career and revealed that the character may be the darkest he has written so far.
Prashanth Neel calls Dragon his 'darkest' character ever
Speaking to
Galatta Plus, Prashanth Neel reflected on his first conversation with Jr NTR regarding the film nearly five years ago. According to the filmmaker, the actor was immediately intrigued after hearing the one-line narration, but he also understood the massive challenge that came with portraying the role.Prashanth revealed that the difficult part of the character was not what audiences had already seen in the teaser, but rather the emotional and dramatic layers hidden beneath the surface. The filmmaker explained that the role demanded a huge leap for a superstar of Jr NTR’s stature because of the complex and morally dark nature of the character.
"We met five years back. When I told him the one-line of the movie," Prashanth shared. He added that it was one of the most difficult decisions of Jr NTR's career that he had to take, when he said yes to the role. He added that viewers would eventually understand the significance of the role once they see the complete story unfold on screen. During the interaction, Prashanth Neel went on to reveal that Jr NTR’s role in Dragon is the darkest character he has written in his career so far. The filmmaker explained that the actor only had one major concern, whether the drama justified the darkness of the character and his actions.
Is Dragon a big risk for Jr NTR?
Prashanth stated that he and Jr NTR spent nearly three years shaping the emotional logic of the story and validating the motivations behind the character’s behaviour. According to him, the process eventually led them to an important scene written toward the climax of the film, which finally convinced Jr NTR to take the risk. "Let’s do it, even if it is a risky thing for me to do," the filmmaker recalled the actor saying. He further admitted that portraying such a morally grey and intense role is a bold move for a star with such a massive fan following and image.
The glimpse released earlier this week introduced Jr NTR as Luger, Assassin in Chief of the Afghan Trading Company. Set against the backdrop of the Golden Triangle and the opium trade in 1967, the film's first glimpse has managed to impress the internet.
