Supreme Court on Thursday referred the long-drawn dispute over Rs 30,000 Crore worth property of late billionaire industrialist Sanjay Kapur, between his mother 80-year-old Rani Kapur and third wife Priya Kapur for mediationSignificantly, former Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud has been appointed as the mediator. Warring parties including Rani Kapur, Priya kapur have been asked to appear before mediator.Bench headed by Justice J B Pardiwala said the dispute appeared to be one that could turn into a long-drawn litigation, “an amicable resolution through mediation would be in the interest of all parties”. The court primarily took into consideration the fact that petitioner Rani Kapur was aged 80 years.SC had on last hearing advised: “The
petitioner should not be fighting a legal battle at this age. She is 80 years of age as on date. It will be in the interest of all the parties concerned if they go for mediation and try to resolve the disputes peacefully and equitably.Noting that this was a “private family affair”, Bench said “let no party make any public statement or go to media”. “All parties must approach mediator with an open mind and assist for an amicable solution”, said the Bench.
The Petition
SC order came in a petition filed by Rani Kapur, mother of Sanjay Kapur who sought protection of movable and immovable assets, expressing apprehension that there was a likelihood of the assets being diverted by daughter in law Priya Kapur. In a notice, Priya accused Rani of breaching her fiduciary duties and conduct adverse to the interests of the trust and its beneficiaries.Delhi High Court, in an interim order passed on April 30, 2026, had already restrained Priya Kapur from alienating, transferring, or dissipating his assets.In a bid to preserve the assets till final adjudication of the dispute HC also prohibited for time being Priya Kapur from altering the ownership or creating third-party rights over assets of Sunjay Kapur.The order comes amid a legal battle initiated by Sunjay Kapur's children from his previous marriage to actor Karisma Kapoor, who have challenged the authenticity of a purported 2025 will that reportedly leaves the entire estate to Priya Kapur.
