The
documentary One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5 is out now on Netflix. The behind the scenes look at Stranger Things is an eye-opener for many fans as it lays out the sheer scale of the sci-fi supernatural thriller. One Last Adventure, featuring co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer, reveals that the final season contained 237 days of filming, 6,725 setups, and 630 hours of footage from the main unit alone. But the Duffers ran into trouble with the Stranger Things series finale, episode 8, and started filming it without having a finished script. Here's what they said in One Last Adventure.
Duffers began Stranger Things finale without finished script
In the documentary, Matt Duffer reveals that they were basically “hounded” by Netflix and production to finish the screenplay for
The Rightside Up. This made the shoot not only stressful but confusing as well for the rest of the crew, who weren't sure which direction to take the show. The Duffers said in
One Last Adventure, "We went into production without having a finished script for the finale. That was scary because we wanted to get it right. It’s the most important episode of the season."
The crew built sets and a few design elements without a finished screenplay and used concept art and other previous conversations as reference. At one point, set production assistant Montana Maniscalco states on camera, “Today is a very interesting day. We are shooting episode 8, which isn’t completely written yet. Spoiler alert. So we don’t even fully know what’s going on. Everyone on set is walking around with red script pages." There are scenes of Matt and Ross looking nervous as they move ahead without a clear idea.
