Five
years after Drishyam 2 was released, the makers of Mohanlal's film are ready with the third installment. Directed by Jeethu Joseph, Drishyam 3 was initially set for a theatrical release in April 2026. It was only recently revealed that the Malayalam thriller was postponed. Featuring Mohanlal and Meena in key roles, the movie will now arrive on May 21, 2026. Ahead of that, Amazon Prime Video has issued a public note to the makers of the film. According to the notice, industry stakeholders and the public cannot engage in any digital distribution agreements without its authorisations. The OTT giant has claimed that it holds all digital rights associated with Drishyam 3.
Drishyam 3 digital rights row explained
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Amazon Prime Video issued a notice which states that the OTT giant is the 'sole and exclusive' holder of all digital rights of
Mohanlal's Drishyam 3. The rights also include SVOD, TVOD, AVOD, FVOD and EST.The notice further warns the public that Aashirvad Cinemas (Drishyam 3's producers) has no authority to sell, license, or in any manner create third-party interest, lien or charge over the digital rights for the film. This also applies to Aashirvad Cinemas' assigness, licensees, and any other person purportedly authorised by the production house.
"Any person, entity, or digital platform dealing with the Film or its digital rights in contravention of Amazon's exclusivity shall do so at their own risk, cost, and consequences," the statement read.
What does Amazon Prime Video holding digital rights for Drishyam 3 mean?
Since the OTT giant holds all digital rights for Drishyam 3, it reserves the right to initiate legal proceedings. It can also seek injunctive relief and damages against any party found to be infringing upon its exclusive rights or interfering with its contractual relationship regarding Drishyam 3.
What do SVOD, TVOD, AVOD, FVOD and EST mean?
SVOD means subscription video on demand where an user can pay fee to the platform and watch any film that's part of the subscription plan. As for TVOD, it means transactional video on demand, where an user is required to pay per movie. And AVOD means ad-supported video on demand, where the user will have to watch the ads throughout the movie, while the streaming platform may or may not charge the user.
What does FVOD mean? Well, it is free video on demand, where an user can watch content without any subscription. However, the inclusion or exclusion of ads is decided by the OTT platform. And finally, EST means electronic-sell through, where an user has an option to buy the film by paying to the platform.
